We are learning to:
- Select and use appropriate metric units for length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time, with awareness that measurements are approximate.
- Convert between metric units, using decimals.
- Deduce and use formula to find the perimeters and areas of polygons and the volumes of prisms.
- Find the perimeters and areas of circles and composite shapes and the volume of prisms, including cylinders.
- be self managing by organising own learning time.

You need to identify your learning goals - the areas you have gaps in - and plan your learning time in order to complete at least 10 activities (including the revision activity and the assessment task) during this unit. The activitities in red are compulsory and are mostly revision and or tutorials to ensure that you have the understanding to complete the practical tasks.

Area, Perimeter and Volume

Work through the following revision activities then take the tests and record the answers and results in your maths book.

KS3 Bitesize Measures
KS3 Bitesize Measures

Perimeter

  1. Once you have completed these activities click on the following link for a tutorial about circles - how to find the circumference (the length around the circle) and how to find the area of a circle.http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/shapes/circlesrev1.shtml
  2. Figure It Out activity - 'Measurement' Level 4 'Circle Links' p3. You need to do the tutorial before you do this activity.
  3. Figure It Out activity - 'Measurement' Level 4 'Little Links' p4-5
  4. Perimeter Worksheets
Area
  1. Area Worksheets
  2. Figure It Out activity - 'Measurement' Level 4 'Castle Construction' p8-9
  3. Figure It Out activity - 'Measurement' Level 4 'Divide and Prosper' p 10-11
  4. Record your answers and total correct Area Explorer >
  5. Area of a circle
  6. Compound Shapes

Volume
  1. Volume Worksheets
  2. How High? http://www.tki.org.nz/r/digistore/protected/objects/?id=3534&vers=1.0
  3. Use Lego Digital designer to create 10 volume examples. Save this to your folder in studentwrite (make sure you save in your class folder then your own folder inside that)
  4. Figure It Out activity - 'Measurement' Level 4 'Great Gardens' p22-23
Assessment Task
We now have a 21st Century technological classroom; it is no longer a traditional classroom. How can we arrange our classroom to suit our new style of learning and all the equipment we use? Create a plan with dimensions of area, perimeter and volume to show what this new class environment would look like.
Tools you can use Google Sketchup and Lego Digital Designer, PowerPoint,or Word. Make models with boxes or real lego or blocks. If you have another idea, discuss it with your teacher.
